Panda Updates – Monday, July 31
Yang Yang isn’t the only one in a playful mood the past few days! He has, however, caused early retirement for some of our enrichment items. We had a few casualties in the Jolly Ball department the past two weeks, but it’s not quite time to put them up for good. Some of the toys … Continue reading "Panda Updates – Monday, July 31"
Panda Updates – Friday, July 28
As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, one of the most fun parts of watching the twins grow up is observing their preferences in food and enrichment. Although the girls are playing with and chewing on bamboo, they are not fully consuming it, and it isn’t considered a portion of their diet at this point. Still, … Continue reading "Panda Updates – Friday, July 28"
The new Georgia River turtle couple
If anyone has visited Scaly Slimy Spectacular recently, you may have noticed some changes happening. One change in particular is that we no longer have our female alligator snapping turtle inside the main gallery. She now lives in the Georgia River habitat with many other turtles, including our big male alligator snapping turtle, Flint. Moving … Continue reading "The new Georgia River turtle couple"
Panda Update – Wednesday, July 26
A few days ago we were privileged to have the Atlanta Journal-Constitution out to the Zoo to visit Ya Lun and Xi Lun and get an update on how quickly the cubs have grown and their upcoming first birthdays. We had the area all prepped and ready, assuming Ya Lun would be the adventurous one … Continue reading "Panda Update – Wednesday, July 26"
Why reduce single-use plastics?
Plastic is a durable material made to last forever, yet 33 percent of it is used once and then discarded. Unfortunately, plastic cannot biodegrade and only breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. What about recycling? Americans alone discard more than 30 million tons of plastic a year; only 8 percent of it gets recycled. … Continue reading "Why reduce single-use plastics?"

The chick was produced via artificial insemination conducted by Zoo Atlanta staff and is the first offspring of the Zoo’s blue crane pair. The new arrival, whose sex … Continue reading "July Hatchlings Around Zoo Atlanta"
A fantastic National Zookeepers Week
Happy belated National Zookeepers Week (NZKW)! July 16-22 was a week spent celebrating zookeepers nationwide. To show their appreciation for all of the hard work that we do, all of the animals stopped pooping for the entire week and cleaned their own habitats for us. …Yeah, right. If anything, they pooped more than usual. But … Continue reading "A fantastic National Zookeepers Week"
Update on Angolan colobus infant
Zoo Atlanta is saddened to share that the Angolan colobus infant born to Lami on July 15, 2017, was found deceased on July 21, 2017. Lami, 12, is an experienced mother, and the Zoo’s Animal Management and Veterinary Teams had observed no signs of any problems following the birth. The infant had been nursing, vocalizing, … Continue reading "Update on Angolan colobus infant"
Panda Update – Monday, July 24
In less than two months, the cubs will be turning a year old! This means the twins will soon be too big and too strong for us to share the same space with. The decrease in handling cubs also means we will have difficulty putting blue food coloring on Ya Lun to assist in identifying … Continue reading "Panda Update – Monday, July 24"
Panda Update – Friday, July 21
“What’s it like working with the pandas?” We get that question a lot as we walk around the Zoo, or even run errands after work in our Zoo shirts. We always love what we do, and every day is different. Some days are just outright fun. Lun Lun tends to spend most of her energy … Continue reading "Panda Update – Friday, July 21"
