Volunteering at Zoo Atlanta – get involved!

Have you ever thought to yourself, “I wish I could support Zoo Atlanta in a more tangible way?” Maybe you’ve even wanted to do so while wearing a red, blue, or green Zoo Atlanta uniform T-shirt? Then do we have good news for you! Zoo Atlanta offers volunteer opportunities for kids, teens, and adults, as well as internships, preceptorships, and externships for current college students or recent graduates. Read on for a quick overview of each program. You can find more information, including how to apply, on our website.

Adult Program (ages 18+)
Open to all adults, this program offers a wide variety of service areas, including both guest interaction and behind-the-scenes paths. Applications are accepted year-round, with orientation and training sessions offered quarterly.

Docent Program (ages 18+)
This program allows those in the Adult Volunteer Program to further their knowledge of the Zoo and our animals through detailed training and unique service areas. Service requirements apply, and training for this program is offered on a varied basis each year.

Internships, Preceptorships, and Externships (current college students or recent graduates)
Those seeking careers in the zoological sciences can explore and develop their skills in a variety of departments here at the Zoo. Application periods vary by program. Applications for Fall 2021 internships are open now through June 18.

HIVE Program (various ages)
This program partners with schools and training programs for teens and adults with disabilities. Through service to the Zoo, HIVE Volunteers learn soft career skills and animal knowledge. This program accepts applications on a rolling basis. Interested organizations can get more information by emailing teenvolunteer@zooatlanta.org.

J.O.E.Y. Program (ages 8-13 with an adult)
This program is geared toward our youngest Volunteers. Kids ages 8-13 volunteer with an adult at public events, quarterly club-style meetings, and on select weekends to develop leadership, animal knowledge, and service skills. The next open application period for this program will be in January 2022.

Volunteen Program (ages 14-17)
Designed for teenagers, this program helps them develop advocacy, empathy, commitment, and animal knowledge skills as they serve in a wide variety of service areas. The next open application period for this program will be in January 2022.
