Kate Leach, DVM

Kate joined the veterinary team at Zoo Atlanta in 2012. Prior to this she practiced veterinary medicine in Connecticut, working with exotic and domestic species, including native wildlife. During veterinary school Kate completed several preceptorships at zoos internationally in Australia, New Zealand, and the US, one of which was at Zoo Atlanta! Kate received her Bachelor of Science from Duke University, having majored in in Biological Anthropology and Anatomy, as well as Biology. She then received her veterinary degree from Massey University in New Zealand, where she graduated with distinction.

Sam Rivera, DVM

Dr. Sam Rivera is the Vice President of Animal Health at Zoo Atlanta, where he oversees the veterinary and nutrition departments. He also sits on the Conservation and Education Committee of the Zoo’s Board of Directors. Dr. Rivera has participated in a wide range of wildlife conservation projects around the globe. He serves as a mentor for veterinary residents, veterinary student externs, and undergraduate students. He is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Robert Hill

Robert’s more than 10 years of experience at Zoo Atlanta have been spent in the care of one of the nation’s largest and most recognized diversities of reptiles and amphibians. His background also includes work as an Amphibian Specialist at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, where he managed a collection of native and tropical amphibians. Robert’s conservation leadership includes participation in a number of field projects to determine the status of native reptiles and amphibians. Rebecca Young

Becky’s background features work with a variety of birds and both terrestrial and marine mammals. Her ambassador animal experience includes positions at Steve Martin’s Natural Encounters, Inc., in Orlando, Fla., and Six Flags Great Adventure & Wild Safari in Jackson, N.J. She has also served as an animal training consultant at the Dallas Zoo and at the Center for Great Apes in Watchula, Florida. Kenn Harwood

Kenn’s professional career working with mammals spans nearly 30 years, 20 of which have been spent at Zoo Atlanta. He joined Zoo Atlanta in 2002 as a giant panda keeper and has since worked in every area of the Zoo’s Mammal Department as a Swing Keeper and Lead Keeper of Carnivores. He has served as the Zoo’s Associate Curator of Mammals since 2016.

Joe Mendelson, PhD

One of the nation’s foremost experts in his field, Joe was among the first responders to the crisis of global amphibian decline and is responsible for the naming of more than 40 new amphibian and reptile species. His research initiatives include biodiversity surveys in Latin America; biomechanics; natural history, ecological and taxonomic studies; and research and program development related to amphibian conservation.
