The African elephant research projects at Zoo Atlanta are multi-faceted and diverse. Topics range from trunk biomechanics to social behaviors and cognition. Through behavioral monitoring we aim to increase choice and complexity in husbandry and habitat, evaluate space use, and monitor behaviors over time. Collaborations with local universities have allowed for technical research on trunk use, mechanics, and capabilities.
