Safari Camp Scholarship Program

Applications are available now for children from Title One Schools in metro Atlanta

ATLANTA – March 16, 2023 – Zoo Atlanta will extend community access to its signature camp experience with the return of the Safari Camp Scholarship Program in summer 2023. The program will provide a week of Safari Camp for 42 children ages 5 to 11 from Title One Schools in metro Atlanta. In addition to the City of Atlanta, applicable counties of residence will include Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, and Rockdale. The scholarships are sponsored by Cox Enterprises.

In addition to Safari Camp tuition, awarded campers will also receive daily lunch and snacks, a Safari Camp T-shirt, and an extended care option.

“A key aspect of Zoo Atlanta’s mission is to ensure that the rich resources, experiences, and educational opportunities of the Zoo are accessible to everyone. Early connections with wildlife and the natural world can change a child’s life,” said Raymond B. King, President and CEO. “We are pleased to be able to offer another year of scholarships that can fuel a passion for animals and conservation and support science education.”

The Safari Camp Scholarship Program launched in 2016 and has been offered in every consecutive year with the exception of 2020. To qualify, children must be current residents of the City of Atlanta or one of the qualifying counties and must attend a Title One School. Guardians may apply for scholarships for the weeks of June 5 through June 9; June 12 through June 16; June 19 through June 23; June 26 through June 30; July 10 through July 14; or July 24 through July 28.

Parents or guardians interested in applying should submit a completed application at zooatlanta.org/scholarship. Applications must be accompanied by proof of residence in metro Atlanta; proof the camper attends a Title One School; a letter of need from the guardian describing how the child will benefit from Safari Camp; and a letter of interest from the camper. Applications and required materials may be submitted via email to education@zooatlanta.org with subject line 2023 Summer Camp Scholarship Submission, or via regular mail to Zoo Atlanta Education Department; 800 Cherokee Avenue, S.E.; Atlanta, Georgia 30315. If an applicant is selected, a $25 non-refundable deposit will be required to secure the scholarship.

The deadline to apply is 5:30 p.m. on April 12, 2023. Applications will be reviewed and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Awardees will be notified by April 21.

Safari Camp: Summer Session will run on weekdays from May 30 through August 4, 2023, for campers ages 5 to 14.
