Panda Updates- Monday, July 29

How does our team maintain the highest level of care for older individuals? At almost 27 years old, Lun Lun and Yang Yang are both considered older for giant pandas. They are both in good health, but as part of our efforts to ensure their comfort and well-being, we have made adjustments to their spaces over time to accommodate for their ages. You may see what appear to be large coconut coir fiber logs near some doorways into the giant panda dayrooms. Xi Lun likes to use these as oversized playthings! However, their intended purpose is to provide a soft step for the pandas to step down as they enter the dayrooms, making it easier on their joints as they are taking big steps.

Another accommodation we have made is that we have been able to provide a large, memory foam, orthopedic bed. This creates a nice, soft place to rest. While it took some time for her to investigate it, Lun Lun has decided it is a nice place to take a bear nap and has been seen using it more and more.

Don’t let these two fool you into thinking they are slowing down at all, though. Lun Lun is still a machine of a bear and typically eats more bamboo than any of the others. Yang Yang always has some tricks up his sleeve and may be observed getting into bouts of play. Enjoy this clip of Yang Yang getting a spurt of energy with one of his favorite enrichment balls on our Facebook!
