Panda Updates- Monday, July 15
There are so many interesting facts about giant panda biology and behavior, and one is happening now: pseudopregnancy. During this time, our guests may not see Ya Lun (who is one of the twins) at times because she is experiencing pseudopregnancy. This is something that is normal for giant pandas, and wild giant pandas can experience this as well. While a pseudopregnancy is not a pregnancy, a female panda will undergo the same hormonal and behavioral changes as she would if she were pregnant. During a pseudopregnancy, a panda may tend to sleep for longer periods, may eat less, and may prefer to remain in the behind-the-scenes den areas. Ya Lun is still given the opportunity to go into the dayroom if she wishes to do so, but our team’s main goal is to ensure that she is comfortable wherever she chooses to be. The other female giant pandas, Ya Lun’s sister Xi Lun and mother Lun Lun, are also expected to go through pseudopregnancy this summer, but we can never tell exactly when it will begin.
