Kate Leach, DVM

Kate joined the veterinary team at Zoo Atlanta in 2012. Prior to this she practiced veterinary medicine in Connecticut, working with exotic and domestic species, including native wildlife. During veterinary school Kate completed several preceptorships at zoos internationally in Australia, New Zealand, and the US, one of which was at Zoo Atlanta! Kate received her Bachelor of Science from Duke University, having majored in in Biological Anthropology and Anatomy, as well as Biology. She then received her veterinary degree from Massey University in New Zealand, where she graduated with distinction.

Kookaburras are the largest members of the kingfisher family. Made famous by the Australian folk song “Kookaburra” by Marion Sinclair, kookaburras perch in trees and vocalize loudly. The birds’ loud, raucous call has been used in hundreds of “jungle” movies set in Asia, Africa and the Americans, although the birds are found only in Australia.
