New golden lion tamarin faces

I would like to introduce you to a couple of new golden lion tamarin faces here at Zoo Atlanta! Blixx and Harley, both golden lion tamarins, joined Zoo Atlanta per the recommendations of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Golden Lion Tamarin Species Survival Plan® (SSP) back in the fall. SSPs oversee all species in zoos in North America. They keep track of genetics and help species to survive by pairing individuals who have the best genetics for breeding.

Blixx lives with our male golden lion tamarin named Tiete in the Brazilian Outpost building, and they share the habitat with Cocoa, the Hoffman’s two-toed sloth. Both Blixx and Tiete look very similar, but Blixx can be identified by the poof of hair on the tip of her tail and slightly smaller stature. Blixx and Tiete quickly bonded once introduced and can often be seen grooming each other on habitat together. They also enjoy sitting in the sun on the patio and vocalizing to the other tamarins at Zoo Atlanta.

The second cute face to join Zoo Atlanta is Harley, a male golden Lion tamarin. Harley lives with our female golden lion tamarin named Eva in the outdoor tamarin habitat, which they share with Bonnie, Willow and Nutella the Hoffmann’s two-toed sloths. A quick way to tell Harley apart is his darker coloration on his face and tail, whereas Eva is lighter in color. Eva and Harley enjoy hanging out in their nest box together and interacting with their different enrichment devices.

Make sure to stop by Zoo Atlanta and say hello to Blixx and Harley!
