Keeping cool with the orangutans

Hey all, my name is Kristen, and I’m a member of the Orangutan Care Team here at Zoo Atlanta. I moved here from Miami back in November, so this is my first time experiencing an Atlanta summer.

Staying cool has become a top priority for most of us here in Atlanta, including our orangutans! Orangutans are naturally found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra where they inhabit rainforests with temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to this rather warm temperature range, they have developed several ways to stay cool such as spending time in the shady tree canopy, resting during the hottest parts of the day, consuming water from leaves and water-rich fruits, and sweating, just like we do.

You may observe the orangutans at Zoo Atlanta utilizing some of these same cooling techniques when you come to visit. In addition, the Orangutan Care Team works diligently to provide additional ways to stay cool.

The day starts early so that the animals can access their outdoor spaces before it really starts to heat up, and large fans with water misters are set up around the habitats to provide a nice breeze. Each habitat has shady areas where the orangutans can relax, and keepers provide fun treats like frozen bamboo shoots, frozen berries, giant ice treats filled with fruit, and sugar free juice to help the animals stay hydrated.

Our orangutans also have indoor, climate-controlled housing that allows them to stay nice and warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We utilize primate temperature guidelines, generally based on the individual’s age, to determine if it is safe for them to be outside. If it is too hot, keepers provide access to the indoor holding so that the orangutans can cool down if they choose. Keepers may even give the animals an indoor play day if the temperatures are too extreme. If this is the case, keep an eye out for signage at the habitats to keep you informed.

Now that you know a little more about how our orangutans beat the heat during the summer months, we hope you’ll come by and check them out.  Maybe you’ll even pick up some tips from them on how to stay cool!
