Caring for amazing orangutans

Hello! My name is Jake Bedenbaugh, and I am a member of the Orangutan Care Team here at Zoo Atlanta.

As a dedicated animal care professional at Zoo Atlanta, my days are filled with the incredible privilege of working alongside our vibrant population of orangutans. These majestic creatures never fail to captivate me with their intelligence, agility, and unique personalities. Each orangutan in our care has a distinct character, from the playful antics of Pongo to the wise and contemplative nature of Miri.

Building connections with these magnificent primates goes beyond routine care; it involves understanding their complex social dynamics. In captivity, we observe and facilitate interactions that mimic the familial bonds and hierarchical structures seen in the wild. This ensures not only their physical well-being, but also supports their emotional needs. While the dynamics may differ from their wild counterparts, our efforts to create a socially stimulating environment contribute to their overall welfare.

It’s a rewarding challenge that fuels my passion for conservation, as we strive not only to ensure their well-being but also to raise awareness about the critical need to protect these endangered species and their habitats. Every day brings new insights and joys as I contribute to the conservation efforts for these remarkable orangutans at Zoo Atlanta.
