An early holiday gift for sun bears

Hey everyone, Taylor here from the Carnivore Team! I hope you all have been enjoying your summer so far and staying cool! I cannot believe we are halfway through this year already, and at the halfway point to Christmas! Which I suppose is fitting … because for our Malayan sun bears, Xander and Sabah, Christmas came early! One of our amazing donors here at Zoo Atlanta contributed to help fund a new climbing structure for the bears!

In the Malay language, the sun bear is called basindo nan tenggil, which means “he who likes to sit high.” This is very fitting for these guys because sun bears are excellent climbers, and spend a lot of time in tree canopies building nests with twigs and leaves from branches to sleep in. So, this habitat improvement is great for them to have to be able to show off some of those amazing adaptations they possess.

The project for the new structure started at the end of April and officially wrapped up at the beginning of July. I have to give a huge shout out to our Facilities Team for all the hard work and dedication they put into this project. Watching our two departments come together and collaborate, sharing ideas and resources was awesome to be a part of. Not only did Facilities take the bears’ safety and wellbeing into account, but also those of the care team, and really made this structure functional for everyone! We are so happy with the final product and more importantly, I think it also got Xander and Sabah’s stamp of approval. So next time you are at the Zoo, be sure to come check out the sun bears’ new structure and you might just see one of them taking their mid-morning nap on top of it.
