Exciting updates for Eleanor and Hamlet!
Some very cool renovations are in the works for our warthog habitat here at Zoo Atlanta! These new features will give us the opportunity to provide a more comfortable experience for our warthogs Hamlet and Eleanor, along with more flexibility when it comes to access in these unpredictable Georgia weather conditions – which equals more viewing opportunities for our guests to appreciate observing these icons of the African Savanna.
Renovations being made in our warthog habitat include two concrete feeding pads (pictured) and shelters that will cover said feeding pads (soon to come). These shelters will provide shade from the sun, shelter from the rain, as well as more heating/cooling options to allow the warthogs a more comfortable experience being on habitat during Georgia’s hot summers and cooler winters. Animal staff will continue to give animals access opportunities to behind-the-scenes spaces at extreme temperatures.
When all the shelters are in place, our amazing Horticulture Team will be adding more substrate for wallowing, rooting, and helping the overall drainage of this habitat. Warthogs spend a lot of time using their snouts to dig, making their own wallows to cool off and foraging for things to snack on, so it is important that we keep up so they can continue to do all these natural behaviors.
