My journey to Ewaso Lions
A few years ago, I purchased an animal tracking bracelet from a company called Fahlo which partners with conservation organizations specific to the species featured on each bracelet. At first, it was just a cool way to feel connected to a species I love while supporting conservation, but learning about the lion I was tracking led me to Ewaso Lions! I was immediately inspired by the work they do to protect lions and other large carnivores while supporting the communities that live alongside them.
Ewaso Lions works in northern Kenya with a mission centered on coexistence. They work closely with local communities to find a solution that benefits both people and wildlife. Their programs train community members to monitor lions, reduce human-wildlife conflict, and inspire individuals to become advocates for wildlife within their own communities.
So, when the opportunity came up to apply to champion a conservation organization for support through Zoo Atlanta’s Mabel Dorn Reeder Conservation Endowment Fund, I immediately knew I wanted to support Ewaso Lions! I am so excited that we were awarded this grant and that the funding will go toward their Lions Kids Camp, an amazing program that seeks to enlighten and ignite a new generation of Kenyan conservationists, blending wildlife education, safaris, and conservation-themed games and activities.
What I love most about the Lions Kids Camp is that it creates a sense of pride and connection between young people and the wildlife around them. When children grow up understanding the value of the animals that share their environment, conservation becomes something more personal!
Through this grant opportunity, Zoo Atlanta will fund three Lions Kids Camps in 2026. In fact, Ewaso Lions recently shared that they just hosted 25 children from Nasuulu Conservancy in their first successful camp funded by Zoo Atlanta. They even saw lions on one of their safari rides!
I’m honored that we can support Ewaso Lions’ mission and help contribute to programs that are shaping the future of conservation. What started out as a simple bracelet purchase turned into discovering an incredible organization and having the opportunity to champion this great cause.
If you would also like to support Ewaso Lions and have fun tracking the location of a lion from afar, Fahlo bracelets are available in our Zoo Atlanta Explorer Store!
