ZOO ATLANTA WELCOMES SENG THE SIAMESE CROCODILE
New arrival represents one of Earth’s most endangered crocodile species
ATLANTA – March 27, 2026 – The newest arrival at Zoo Atlanta is a toothy crocodilian whose conservation message is as powerful as his bite. Zoo Atlanta is excited to welcome Seng, a young male Siamese crocodile, to the crocodile habitat at Scaly Slimy Spectacular: The Amphibian and Reptile Experience. Seng arrived on March 20, 2026, from the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park.
“Siamese crocodiles are among the most endangered crocodilians in the world, with a conservation message that extends far beyond the borders of this species’ native range,” said Gina Ferrie, PhD, Vice President of Collections and Conservation. “We hope that as our Members and guests get to know Seng, they will learn more and help us tell the story of the need to protect wetland environments and to keep these wild habitats healthy for the countless species, including humans, that rely on them.”
Native to Southeast Asia, Siamese crocodiles are a freshwater crocodile species averaging six to nine feet as adults, with some males growing larger. Classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Siamese crocodiles are among Earth’s rarest crocodiles. The species was considered close to extinction in the 1990s and is believed to now inhabit only a portion of its original range in the wild. Pressing threats include habitat loss and habitat degradation due to agriculture and other forms of human encroachment. Additional challenges include pesticides in wetland environments and the illegal wildlife trade.
Seng’s new home is the largest habitat in Scaly Slimy Spectacular, which houses scores of reptiles and amphibians in habitats designed to replicate some of the planet’s most iconic natural environments, from the deserts of Africa to Georgia’s own tidal creeks.
