Meet Mojave

Sidewinder
Named after the Mojave Desert
male
Estimated 2010 - 2011
Scaly Slimy Spectacular

Mojave is usually calm and reserved, but not when it comes to food! His favorite meal is a mouse or quail chick. He is mostly active at night, but during the day he can been seen hanging out in the open in his habitat, or partially visible in a hiding spot.

Mojave came to the Zoo as part of a group of sidewinders that participated in research in which their movements were studied. Only a few snake species move in the unique way of “sidewinding.” One of the results of this research was the construction of a robot that could mimic the way these animals move, which could prove useful in recovery operations where humans can't go, or possibly even interplanetary exploration!
