STEM Day at Zoo Atlanta

Explore science, technology, engineering and math in the Zoo during a statewide celebration on May 3.

WHAT:
Zoo Atlanta joins fellow educators, schools, students and educational organizations statewide in celebrating Georgia’s seventh-annual STEM Day on Friday, May 3, 2019. The collaborative celebration, produced by TAG-Ed, engages STEM-based organizations and schools across the state to highlight the importance of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Visitors and school groups are encouraged to visit STEM-centric activity stations throughout the Zoo. At the Science Station, use microscopes to look at insects up-close, and play “fact or fiction” to test your insect knowledge. At the Technology Station, use FLIR thermal imaging technology at the gorilla habitats, and examine camera-trap images to better understand gorilla behaviors. At the Engineering Station, engineer design solutions focused on the future all-new African Savanna. At the Math Station, count and estimate wildlife populations using mark-recapture methods. Activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., while supplies last, and are free with general admission.

Now more than ever, the STEM disciplines are central to the evolving fields of wildlife conservation, zoological animal care and interpretive design. Zoo Atlanta exemplifies and promotes excellence in these disciplines, from groundbreaking animal behavior research to cutting-edge research technology to exhibit design.

Coming in summer 2019: the all-new African Savanna, featuring new and expanded habitats for African elephants, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, warthogs and meerkats.
