Panda Updates – Monday, April 17

As the girls are becoming more used to being outside, we are ever-so-slowly increasing the amount of time they spend out in Habitat 1. Currently the ladies are okay being in the outdoor habitat before the Zoo opens until around 9:30 am. Every day we’re trying to extend that a little bit further since they need to become accustomed to the space. As long as Lun Lun has bamboo she likes, she is pretty chill. The girls are still a bit unsure, as is normal and expected. They are also having to get used to all the new sounds outside as well! One sound that can sound pretty scary is the leaf blower. Before the Zoo opens we have staff walk around the Zoo blowing the paths clean of leaves and twigs. Lun Lun and Yang don’t mind the leaf blower, but the girls were quite scared the first time they heard it. We planned that their first few times hearing this new sound would be when they still had the opportunity to run to the dayroom. Now that they’re spending more time outside, it’s funny to see an initial nervous reaction when they hear the leaf blower, but they then run to Mom – who is unfazed — and take cues from her. Slowly they’re learning that if Mom doesn’t react to weird sounds, it’s nothing to be worried about. Quickly they calmed back down and were exploring the habitat, even though the leaf blower was still in the vicinity.
