Love Hornbills Day

February 13

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Every day is a good day to show love to hornbills, but on February 13, we’ll flock together and celebrate these uniquely-nosed avians.

  • Learn about hornbills through biofact exploration, games, and activities.
  • Can’t join us in person? Check out Zoo Atlanta’s social media networks for a special Love Hornbills Day takeover.
  • Show you’re a conservation hero year-round with the purchase of an Animal Awareness Day tote bag!
    • Use provided fabric markers to decorate and make your bag exclusively yours.
    • All proceeds go to the Zoo’s conservation fund that allows us to help animals in the wild and their habitats.

Activities are free for Zoo Atlanta Members and children under 3; free with general admission.

In the Wild …

There are 32 species of hornbills in Asia. Nine are listed on the IUCN Red List as Endangered or Critically Endangered.

Asian hornbills are some of the largest and most visually striking birds in the world. Across Asia, hornbills are known as the “gardeners of the rainforest” as they are key seed-dispersers to maintain forest health.

What’s the Issue?

  • There are two issues that affect Asian hornbill species in the wild: habitat loss and the wildlife trade.
    • Habitat loss is the most significant threat to Asian hornbill species, as they live in mature trees in primary rainforests that are often targeted for logging.
    • Several hornbill species are affected by illegal wildlife trade, either for the live bird trade, or for body parts used as souvenirs.

What’s the Solution? How can you help?

Everyone can help Asian hornbills by being mindful of what you buy when traveling abroad or over the internet. To learn more about wildlife trafficking and how you can avoid it, visit the Wildlife Trafficking Alliance.

In addition, please consider purchasing only Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified materials. From printer paper and toilet paper to plywood for construction projects, look for the FSC logo as a guide in making the most sustainable choice.
