Double-wattled Cassowary

Double-wattled Cassowary

These massive birds are related to ostriches. They cannot fly and instead walk over the ground in the rainforest seeking all varieties of small animals and fruits to eat. They generally are solitary birds; however, the male incubates the egg and looks after the babies for about nine months after hatching.

The cassowary habitat is open year-round; however, on colder days the animal most likely will choose to stay inside its enclosed space, with a heat lamp, located at the back of the habitat.
