Atlanta Science Festival at the Zoo

March 9

Zoo Atlanta is excited to contribute to the 2024 Atlanta Science Festival!

Join us for an annual celebration of the world-class learning and STEM career opportunities in metro Atlanta.

BioMechanics Day returns on March 9 to kick off the Atlanta Science Festival activities at Zoo Atlanta. In addition to our interactive booth at the Exploration Expo on March 23 at Piedmont Park, join us on March 22 for an evening adventure and exploration of wild technology at Zoo Atlanta to engage budding scientists of all ages. Biomechanics Day: Animals in Motion

March 9 | 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Ever wonder how orangutans swing, or how an elephant trunk works? Join us at Zoo Atlanta to celebrate the diversity of animals on Earth and the incredible ways they move. With help from biomechanics experts at the Georgia Institute of Technology, guests can participate in live demonstrations and presentations sure to generate excitement about biomechanics and applications in Bio-inspired Design. This program will engage participants of all ages, inspiring them to learn more about themselves and the natural world.

Biomechanics Day is a day of learning and experiencing biomechanics of animals from around the world. This event will feature representatives in biomechanics from the Georgia Institute of Technology, sharing their work with Zoo Atlanta guests. During the event, we will host live demonstrations and presentations around the Zoo that will interest both children and adults in learning about biomechanics of humans and animals alike. After the event, we hope for all attendees to be excited about biomechanics, some applications in Bio-inspired Design, and in pursuing the scientific method when thinking of biology in the classroom and beyond. Free with general admission.

Twilight Trek: Wild Technology

March 22 | 6:30 - 9 p.m.

Experience the Zoo in a new way on this guided after-hours tour! Join the adventure as we explore the Zoo using the latest research technology, and discover what the animals do when the humans are away!

On this tour, participants will have the opportunity to get hands-on with some of the technology used to study animals in zoos and in the wild. Our Zoo Educators will introduce participants to Forward Looking InfraRed (FLIR) technology, trail cameras, night-vision scopes, radio telemetry, and Passive Integrated Transponders (PIT Tags). Participants will learn how these tools are used by humans to better understand and help animals.

COST: $27/person (3 and under are free)

Atlanta Science Festival Expo at Piedmont Park

March 23 | 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

How Did the Golden Lion Tamarin Cross the Road? Conservation action requires asking questions and investigating the answers to formulate solutions. Join Zoo Atlanta as we examine the problem of habitat fragmentation and explore strategies that are being implemented to mitigate its negative effects in order to save wildlife worldwide!

Learn how wildlife corridors are critical strategies to connect populations of fragmented species and the role that Zoo Atlanta is playing in the conservation of golden lion tamarins.

Visit Zoo Atlanta’s booth at the Atlanta Science Festival Expo at Piedmont Park to try your hand at designing and building a wildlife corridor to connect fragmented populations on a map, and learn more about how scientists utilize technology to monitor wildlife populations and gauge the success of their conservation actions. Come see if you have what it takes to be a conservation champion!
